Sustainable Timber Structure

Rainforest Exhibition Centre

Our clear and imaginative proposal for the Living Rainforest near Newbury in Berkshire was the winning submission in a competition for designing the most sustainable tropical greenhouse in Europe, housing a world class visitor centre.

The large span timber frame creates a flexible exhibition space, and high performance glazing allows it to be highly naturally lit when required.

The new timber framed building pictured was an exercise in sustainable construction; it is a highly insulated timber frame structure. Even the insulation is made from recycled materials, and this theme is carried through to the majority of the building finishes.

A new biomass boiler system provides heat for the building and the tropical greenhouses.

Photovoltaic cells provide electricity.
